Our Lady of Grace: The eastern part of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, clustered around the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce parish church, has always been a traditionally francophone neighbourhood. It was bisected by the Decarie Expressway in the 1960s. The central and western parts were, and for the most part still are, traditionally home to middle-class and working-class anglophones with a significant lower-class population (though it has been on the decline in recent years). The majority of residents in this district speak English in their homes with only 32% speaking French.

Città Italiana: Many services are available to residents in Italian, in addition to English language and French. The Leonardo Da Vinci Centre, for instance, offers service in all three languages. This cultural centre contains theatres, gyms, bocce playing areas and a café. Saint Leonard was the site of the dispute that led to the creation of Quebec's first language legislation. Italian immigrants wished to send their children to English schools, while the local school board refused and tried to force them into French-language education.

Art of Gentrification: Griffintown is the popular name given to the former southwestern downtown part of Montreal, Quebec, which existed from the 1820s until the 1960s and was mainly populated by Irish immigrants and their descendants. One can identify Griffintown as the portion of the ward of St. Ann located north of the Lachine Canal; the part south of the canal is now part of Pointe-Saint-Charles. It was the earliest and largest faubourg annexed to Old Montreal before the introduction of the tram car in the 1840s.

Gentrified Housing: Griffintown was once a very difficult place to live, and had high rates of crime. Given the government's focus on developing the area in the last 15 years, however, the neighborhood is slowly being transformed and more families and young professionals are beginning to settle into the area.

History Abounds: Montreal has been around since 1634, when it was founded as the city of Ville-Marie. As such, it has a long and prolific tradition of maintaining historical sites and buildings all around the city.
