I had to change mine from 22. WEIRD.
I did bio skeletons for my characters like we do in RP games. That is proving to be incredibly helpful instead of just writing what I think they're like. I also did some additional research that led to some amazing ideas. Totally cool!

I had to change mine from 27.
I DLed a program that's really helpful called Scrivener. You can get a free trial for it that runs through the end of NaNo. You can create synopses for your characters on it, complete with pictures and such. I'm pretty organize-y when it comes to this kind of thing, so the program is extremely useful for me.

OMG NICOLE, THANKS! Looks sexy as faq. I will try it! What happens though to the data of the characters once the trail is over? Just copy and paste it somewhere else?
Angel, yeah, that's how I generally plan and writing shit out like I do for boards has been 100000000% helpful. Each day I work on personalities and bios I find another twist to add. It's effing amazing!

I'm not entirely certain to be honest. You might be able to open the program still, but saving and creating new things would be an issue. You should be able to just copy and paste it elsewhere. I know if you end up meeting your word count at the end, you get a heavy discount on the program, so that helps, too, if you decide to stick with it.
